Dear Academy West Family,
I am hopeful that this finds you all safe and healthy. We are definitely in a concerning and unpredictable situation and the staff at Academy West and Westwood Heights School District wants you to know that we have your family’s well-being at the forefront of our concerns. We miss all of your smiling faces and we look forward to a time when things are back to whatever we consider normal at that point in time.
I understand that one of the next big concerns after the health, safety and livelihood of your family is your student’s education. I am hopeful that many of you have taken advantage of the supplemental materials that your teachers have provided for you via your school google account. Before this past Friday, we were waiting on direction from the Governor and the Michigan Department of Education on how to move forward with the school year. We now know that students will not return to the school building for the remainder of the 2019-20 schoolyear and that we will instead have to offer your regular classes through other methods.
Academy West students will begin receiving lessons from their classroom teachers in the coming weeks via Google Classroom. Students who are familiar with this resource should log in and see what is already available from their teachers and check back in daily to stay involved. Students who are not familiar with Google classroom or do not know how to log on should contact the school. Your teachers will also be contacting you through phone calls or text messages to help you access this information.
If you need a device to work on class material, please contact the school office to arrange a time to pick one up. If you need internet access, please contact one of the local providers that are offering free internet access. If you are not eligible for those resources, the district has limited hotspots available for checkout.
Students who are working on Edmentum (PLATO) should continue working on these classes and communicating with staff using the messenger tool in PLATO. This can be accessed using the envelope icon found in the upper right hand corner of the screen.
If you are an expected 2020 graduate, Academy West staff will be contacting you individually to discuss your current credits and changes to our graduation requirements. If you have changed address, phone number or email since you completed your enrollment packet in the fall, please contact the office in order to give us the most updated information.
