Pumpkin Carving at Academy West Alternative High School

On this Halloween day, kids dress up in their favorite costume and utter those words, "Trick or Treat." In the tradition of Halloween, students at Academy West Alternative High School decided to carve up some pumpkins.

"It’s fun for real. It’s my first time carving a pumpkin. I never did this before and it's coming out good " -Academy West Student

During last Friday’s enrichment class, students at Academy West had the opportunity to choose between many pumpkins of all different sizes. With Michael Jackson’s "Thriller" playing in the background and the smell of pumpkins in the air, most students walked into the classroom with hesitation.

Academy West teacher and Student Council Advisor, Brandon Kaiser, explained, "A lot of our students have never had this experience before. It’s a fall tradition so we try to make it happen for them."

More than 20 kids and staff took part in the activity, carving scary faces into the pumpkins, many for the first time.

One student who took part in the festivities carved his for a relative. “This scary pumpkin is for my nephew."

Despite the students’ initial hesitation, the room filled with laughter and the smiles spoke for themselves.

"This makes me feel great. They are having a blast,” said Kaiser.

When the students finished their pumpkin masterpieces, they placed them in the hall of the school, lined up the pumpkins and placed a candle inside. The students were able to take home their pumpkins and put them on the porch. Tonight, kids will pass that scary pumpkin and, once again, utter those famous words, "Trick or Treat."
