Annual Education Report

January 29, 2020

Dear Parents and Westwood Heights Community Members:
Please consider this an invitation to review our Annual Education Report (AER) which provides key information on the 2018-19 educational progress for Academy West Alternative High School. The (AER) addresses the complex reporting information required by federal and state laws. The school’s report contains information about student assessment, accountability and teacher quality. If you have any questions about the AER, please contact Mr. Paul Casey, Principal, for assistance (810) 591-0123.
The AER is available for you to review electronically by visiting the following link or you may review a copy in the main office at Academy West Alternative High School.

For the 2017-18 school year, schools were identified using new definitions and labels as required in the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). A Targeted Support and Improvement (TSI) school is one that has at least one underperforming student subgroup. An Additional Targeted Support (ATS) school is one that has three or more underperforming student subgroups. A Comprehensive Support and Improvement (CSI) school is one whose performance is in the lowest 5% of all schools in the state. Some schools are not identified with any of these labels. In these cases, no label is given.
Academy West is currently operating as a Comprehensive Support an Improvement (CSI) school based on 2016-17 data. The school was identified as performing in the lowest 5% of schools in the state. Academy West has operated as a C.S.I. school in partnership with the Genesee Intermediate School District facilitators since the beginning of the 2017-18 school year.
The results from the school index report were used to drive the development of the school improvement plan. The plan identifies annual measurable objectives that will serve as strategic targets as well as strategies that will be used to reach those targets. Three key areas have been identified as areas of need for Academy West students. Math proficiency and growth, Reading proficiency and growth and graduation rate are the focus areas for the program with specific strategies in place to address each of these priorities.

State law requires that we also report additional information.
1. Students are referred to Academy West Alternative for a variety of reasons. Students who are deficient in credits or who have had their education interrupted for any reason can benefit from the alternative schedule and curriculum that Academy West offers. Students do not need to reside in district to attend. . Please contact Mr. Paul Casey, Principal, for assistance.
2. Academy West offers two programs, our traditional on-site blended learning environment with teacher led instruction as well as Westwood Virtual Academy, a partnership with MyVirtual Academy in which students complete virtual courses through a board approved online program.
3. Academy West Alternative High School, along with the entire Westwood Heights School District, received district-wide full accreditation from the AdvancED School Accreditation Program during the 2016-2017 school year. Academy West also maintains a continuous School Improvement Plan that is revised and updated annually to meet State and district guidelines. Academy West partners with the Genesee Intermediate School District to align goals with desired outcomes.
4. Curriculum is developed and implemented accordingly with the Michigan Common Core Curriculum. For a copy of the core curriculum, please contact Mr. Paul Casey, Principal..
5. Academy West students are functioning below the county and state levels in all academic areas on the S.A.T and M-Step Assessments. Specific strategies are being implemented to address these areas of need.
6. Academy West has limited participation at Parent-Teacher conferences. Less than 10% of our students are represented by parents at conferences. To accommodate this, teachers make weekly parent contacts for students who are struggling academically or behaviorally.
7. Academy West students demonstrate a post-secondary enrollment rate of 15.5%. The staff at Academy West has implemented a mentoring program to help boost our graduation rate and our post-secondary enrollment simultaneously.
In Closing, we are happy to share this information with you as we move forward in our process of improving academic performance at Academy West. Rather than shy away from the challenge before us, our teachers and staff consider this an opportunity to grow and develop our program into an educational support network that produces positive outcomes for our students.
